While every parenthood journey is different for every couple, there are cases when it may take longer than normal to achieve pregnancy. After trying to conceive for a year, if you are below 35 years, it may mean that there is an underlying issue. Therefore, seeking a South Charleston fertility evaluation is important to help you understand the potential reason for infertility and if your condition is treatable. Fertility evaluation involves different tests that diagnose what is happening in your reproductive system that could be causing infertility. You can read the following discussion to see what tests you may need to evaluate your fertility.

Blood and Urine Tests

Blood and urine tests are the easiest tests you will undergo to check your fertility. Your doctor will ask you to give a sample of your urine so they can use it to test for luteinizing hormone. Also known as LH, the hormone has increased levels in the female body at the time before ovulation. On the other hand, a blood test will show the progesterone hormone levels in the blood.

Transvaginal Ultrasound

Most women go for ultrasounds during mid-pregnancy to check for their unborn child’s condition. You can also go for an ultrasound to check for the possible causes of your infertility. During a transvaginal ultrasound, your doctor uses a wand-shaped transducer, places a condom over it, and then applies a lubricant over the condom. You will then insert the transducer gently into your vagina and hand the handle to your doctor to continue the exam. The ultrasound will transmit information on your uterus, ovaries, and endometrial lining to check for abnormalities.

Hysterosalpingogram

HSG involves using an X-ray to check your uterus and fallopian tubes for possible blockages. During this procedure, you will lie down under a fluoroscope, where your doctor will insert a cannula and then fill your uterus with iodine. The X-ray will produce images of your tubes and uterus as the contrasting liquid moves to give an outline. Blocked fallopian tubes mean you may need another procedure to check directly into the tubes.

Laparoscopy

Your doctor can recommend laparoscopy as an evaluation for fertility, especially if you have a case of unexplained infertility. Laparoscopy will check for signs of endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, fibroids, scar tissue buildup, and reproductive system abnormalities. During the procedure, your doctor administers anesthesia so you will not feel any pain. Your doctor will insert a needle, inject gas to make visibility easier, and then insert a laparoscope through a small incision. The camera in the laparoscope will allow your doctor to examine your abdominal structures for abnormalities. During a laparoscopy, your doctor may attempt to open blocked tubes, remove scar tissue and correct any other abnormalities.

Achieving the dream of being a parent means that your reproductive system should function correctly to make pregnancy possible. In the case of unexplained infertility after different attempts to conceive, you can seek fertility evaluation to give a reason for infertility and set up treatment. Reasons for infertility can range from blocked tubes, fibroids, problems with the uterine lining, and ovarian cysts. All these reasons can be ruled out using various tests available for women to help them achieve parenthood.
