Anxiety is a common health issue affecting all ages, including teenagers. These teens are known to come with a wide range of emotions as they navigate through adolescence. Recently, the rate of Charlotte anxiety continues to be a dominant concern among youths. If left untreated, anxiety can significantly affect the daily life of teenagers in various ways, including stress, inability to focus on studies, and depression. Since every child is different, anxiety may differ, but there are common factors common among most teens. Keep reading this article to understand why teenagers suffer from anxiety.

Hormones

The teen’s body may constantly change during the adolescent period. As a result, they may have feelings of anger, depression, sadness, and anxiety without any apparent reason. This mood occurs due to fluctuations in hormone levels. Young boys are affected by testosterone increases, while teenage ladies experience a change in hormones during menstruation. Due to the lack of knowledge in coping with these emotions and overall immaturity, hormone changes can increase kids’ anxiety.

Peer Pressure

Children nowadays face peer pressure, which can be negative or positive and cause a high-anxiety level. Some negative peer pressure, like forced crimes and stealing, can be anxious. Additionally, if your teenage friends excel socially and academically, this can pressure your kid to do the same. This pressure can lead to social anxiety, which may occur from bullying. As a parent, you should differentiate between anxiety and shyness because anxiety can impact the overall well-being of your child.

Medications

Some medicines can have unpleasant side effects on a teen’s body, leading to signs of anxiety or increasing the chances of an anxiety attack. In most cases, you can find anxiety symptoms in some prescribed drugs, such as asthma and thyroid medicines. On the other hand, you may have anxiety resulting from decongestants. When you abruptly discontinue using certain anxiety drugs, such as benzodiazepines, it may increase anxiety due to withdrawal symptoms.

Depression

In the adolescent phase, children may experience anxiety and depression simultaneously, which can be challenging for the parent to differentiate. The signs of depression can look like those of anxiety hence being hard for you to establish the root cause of the symptoms. Indicators of depression include persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, hopelessness, or misery lasting more than two weeks. Social withdrawal, unwillingness to travel, and physical complaints like muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue may cause depression, which increases the chances of getting anxiety.

Parental Disapproval

During the teenage period, teens may strive to gain their parent’s approval while instantly wanting to rebel against society and parental authority. This growth stage can annoy and be difficult for the child and her parents. When parents disapprove of their actions, they may experience anxiety. As a result, the kids may continue to be involved in behaviors that are against their parent’s wishes. Although this stage is natural and necessary, it can trigger anxiety for every teen facing it.

Anxiety proves to be a complex issue affecting many teenagers today. While the causes of anxiety in youths can be diverse, seeking treatment for this situation is necessary. By considering the root causes of anxiety, educators, mental health professionals, and parents can give teenagers the essential guidance and support to handle their condition successfully. Inspiring youths to engage in healthy-coping mechanisms, such as mindfulness and exercise, is vital. These factors assist the younger generation in building resilience and enable them to deal effectively with anxiety.
