Do you know that it is possible to have vision problems and have to live with glasses for the rest of your life? While it seems like an effective solution, it may get tiresome living with contact lenses and glasses. You can get corrective treatment with LASIK Jenkintown, which involves using a special laser to cut and change the shape of your cornea. The procedure can correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, which cause abnormal curving of the cornea to disrupt normal vision. Here are a few questions and answers to help you understand a few facts about LASIK surgery.

When Does LASIK Eye Surgery Become Necessary?

Treatment with this form of surgery can help correct different vision problems. First, it can correct myopia, where your eyeballs are slightly longer than normal, causing you to see only close objects. Myopia also causes your cornea to curve too sharply, thus focusing light rays in front of your retina while blurring distant vision. Secondly, LASIK can correct hyperopia that causes light to focus behind the retina making distant vision appear blurry. Lastly, when your cornea curves unevenly, you may develop astigmatism that interferes with distant and near visions.

Who Should Not Go for LASIK Surgery?

You may not be eligible for this surgery if you have an eye condition that causes thinning and bulging of the cornea. Secondly, severe nearsightedness, very large pupils, and thin corneas may prevent you from receiving this treatment. Your doctor will ask questions to determine if you need this treatment or another treatment option.

Are There Risks Related to LASIK Eye Surgery?

Rarely do complications occur with this surgery, but you may develop side effects, including glares and dry eyes. You will likely feel your eyes dry as you heal during your first few months. Your doctor will give you eye drops to improve the quality of your vision. Secondly, you will find it difficult to see at night for a few weeks and have increased sensitivity to light. During surgery, the laser may remove too little tissue, which will not give clearer vision, and in other cases, remove too much eye tissue. Lastly, removing and folding back the flap may lead to infections and cause corneal tissue to grow abnormally under the flap.

What Happens During Evaluation for LASIK Eye Surgery?

You will go for a consultation before surgery so your doctor can evaluate your medical history through comprehensive eye exams. The evaluation assesses whether this procedure will work for you successfully. Your doctor will check for indications of eye infections, inflammation, dry eyes, large pupils, and high eye pressure. Your doctor will also check your cornea’s shape, contour, and measurement. During the checking, your doctor will determine what areas need reshaping and the amount of tissue your doctor will need to remove from the cornea. Your doctor will discuss possible benefits, risks, and concerns with this surgery.

LASIK involves using a cutting laser to cut a flap of your front eye and folding it back to access the cornea and reshape it. While you can still see, you may have a vague vision for up to three months. The surgery offers you a chance to get an improved vision from your previous vision. You will no longer need to use your glasses and contact lenses after surgery as much as before.
