Pap Smear

A Pap smear is a screening test to detect early signs of cervical cancer. The OB/GYN will collect a sample of cells from the cervix and send it to the lab for analysis. Women should start getting Pap tests at age 21 and continue every three years until age 65.

Breast Exam

A breast exam is a physical examination of the breasts to check for lumps, changes in shape or size, or other abnormalities. Your OB/GYN will also teach you how to perform breast self-examinations at home. Women should have a clinical breast exam every three years starting at age 20 and annually starting at age 40.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for any abnormal cells. During a colposcopy, your OB/GYN will use a special microscope to view the area and may take a biopsy to send to the lab for analysis. A colposcopy is often recommended if a Pap smear shows abnormal results.

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows your OB/GYN to examine the inside of your uterus for any abnormalities, such as fibroids or polyps. The OB/GYN will insert a thin, lighted tube through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. They may also take a sample of tissue for biopsy during the procedure.

Laparoscopy

A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows your OB/GYN to examine the pelvic area for any abnormalities, such as endometriosis or ovarian cysts. The OB/GYN will make small incisions in the abdomen and insert a laparoscope, a thin, lighted tube with a camera, to view the area. They may also perform surgery to remove any abnormal tissue or cysts during the procedure.

IUD Insertion

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Your OB/GYN will insert the device through the cervix and into the uterus, where it will stay in place for several years. IUDs are a long-term, effective birth control option for many women.

Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation, also known as “getting your tubes tied,” is a surgical procedure to permanently prevent pregnancy. Your OB/GYN will cut, tie, or seal the fallopian tubes, which prevents the eggs from reaching the uterus. Tubal ligation is a permanent form of birth control and should only be considered if you are sure that you do not want to have children in the future.

In conclusion, OB/GYNs are trained medical professionals who provide essential healthcare services to women. Regular checkups and screenings can help detect issues early and prevent serious health problems.
