What are the symptoms of abdominal pain?

Abdominal pain may also be described as cramping, bloating, gas or diarrhea. You may experience these symptoms because of the following:

    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Constipation or an increased urge to have bowel movements
    • Bloating or gassiness

What are the causes of abdominal pain?

Abdominal pain can be caused by a variety of conditions, including:

Bladder infection: A urinary tract infection is a common cause of abdominal pain. The symptoms are usually localized to the lower abdomen. Urine tests will usually confirm this diagnosis, and treatment will usually begin with antibiotics to kill the bacteria responsible for the infection.

Gallbladder disease: Gallbladder disease can cause abdominal pain. Gallstones that form in the gallbladder can block bile ducts, which may lead to inflammation and pain in the abdomen or backside.

Liver disease: Abdominal pain caused by liver disease includes jaundice, an enlarged liver, and liver cirrhosis. These conditions are typically accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and fever.

Constipation: Constipation is the most common cause of chronic abdominal pain. Constipation results when stool remains in the bowel for long periods. This can occur when you have diarrhea or cannot make enough stool to move it along. If constipation persists for more than a few days, it can cause colon inflammation (colitis). The inflammation leads to an infection and may cause rectal bleeding.

In addition to being uncomfortable, constipation also increases pressure on nerves that carry pain signals from your abdomen to your brain. This can increase your pain sensitivity and worsen when you are exposed to intense sensations such as pressure or movement.

Colic (abdominal pain that occurs in infants): Colic (abdominal pain that occurs in infants) is characterized by pain that is sudden, severe, and unrelenting. It may start during the first day of life and continues for weeks or months. Colic typically begins after feeding and may be relieved by burping. The pain tends to be localized in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen or upper left quadrant of the abdomen.

    Treatment for abdominal pain

If you have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, your doctor may recommend seeing a gastroenterology specialist or hepatology for further evaluation. In some cases, an endoscopy is recommended to determine the cause of your symptoms.

Abdominal pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. The most common causes are infections and inflammatory conditions. If you have severe abdominal pain, you should see your doctor. It is essential to be evaluated and treated promptly to prevent further complications and ensure that the pain does not get worse or become more challenging to treat.
